Set on a kettle pond, with large glacial outcroppings, stone walls, woodland forest abundant with ferns and native trees, this home has been an idyllic setting for this family for several generations. Recent building additions including a new barn offered an opportunity to tie back the house to its vernacular landscape, restoring and redefining the landscape vocabulary. The design redefines the entry sequence as one approaches the house through three distinct areas. A walkway, to the new front door carefully curating the existing mature shrub and tree specimens, a new parking court and ramp to the back of the house and a repurposed stone terrace leading out from the new kitchen. Stone artifacts and remnants from site were saved and integrated with new stonework for the walls, steps and walkways to create the new entry sequence. A simple plant palette ties the mature tree and shrub specimens to its woodland surrounds while adding to the seasons textures and color. Stone selection, and close collaboration with stone installer ensured a seamless look between old and new elements in the landscape.
