Memorial Garden at Temple Beth El

Eastside, Providence, RI

This Memorial garden, created by the Sugerman family celebrates their parents love for gardens, seasons, and craft. Envisioned as a contemplative garden to invite children, temple patrons and passerby’s it is also a space for quiet meditation. The site consisted of a gently sloping lawn to the sidewalk, abutting the temple entrance ramp with over grown shrubs.

The design organizes around an oval sculpture and water garden allowing children to run around. It includes a new copper wind sculpture, and a symbolic water bowl surrounded by low plantings tying in the Jewish traditional elements and temple’s architectural details. The temples copper roof and limestone exterior are echoed in the copper wind sculpture, the paver walkway and the wood benches. The garden slope was leveled to create an elevated garden to both separate from the sidewalk, while making it accessible. The low granite curb allows the garden to be viewed from the sidewalk yet limit access from the street. The planting is combination of some formal plant placement and informal grouping of native shrubs, trees and pollinators for continuous seasonal color and texture. Lighting is an important element for safety and extended use after dark. The garden is a backdrop for outdoor events, and invites all to enjoy and learn about native plants and pollinators.
