Woonsocket, RI
Beacon Charter School for the Arts outdoor classroom and event space
The school recently purchased the first united methodist church site and grounds, in Woonsocket RI to accommodate all school gatherings and theater performances and provide much needed open space for the students and expand curriculum offerings. The building and grounds are nominated to be on national historic register and surrounded by asphalt parking lot, a street and an office/apartment building.
Through careful programming with a core teacher/faculty led group we created a space that allows curriculum enhancement, with areas for an outdoor classroom to seat 20 students, an outdoor performance, event/play space for flexible use, a nature study area and rain garden, and a sports corner for basketball. A new masonry stair replaces the wood stair while adding a storage areas and an outdoor kitchen space.
The new design artfully combines these programs while also using materials that honor the historic architecture are sustainable and affordable. The cobblestone and other salvable materials on site are reused, impervious surfaces removed and pervious surfaces incorporated to recapture stormwater on site. Rain gardens with logs and native plants rich in texture and shape were used for "Nature study" courses while also allowing capturing rain water. The space lighting and layout allows renting the space for neighborhood events to be a source of revenue generation for the school.
New Tall fastigiate street trees and understory trees both screen and create shade and a sense of enclosure and safety on this urban site along with a fence and gates placed strategically.
